Be as resilient as an Emu: In 1932, Australia faced an unexpected “enemy”: emus. These large, flightless birds ran amok in Western Australia, trampling crops and annoying farmers. The solution? The government sent in the military armed with machine guns and 10,000 rounds of ammunition to tackle the emu problem. But the birds, quick and agile, proved harder to manage than anticipated. Despite their best efforts, chasing them with guns and even mounting a machine gun on a truck, the military could only account for about 1,000 emus. The result? The birds emerged victorious in what is now humorously remembered as the “Great Emu War.”
